Disney & the Gays – It’s Update Time

Man, o man, o man, it’s been wild! So first, if you haven’t already heard of the whole Flordia “Don’t Say Gay Bill” and the Disney tie-in, feel free to take a look here and come on back. I’ll wait. For those of you in the know, let’s continue down this “Mouse” hole and see where we are today with Disney, “the Gays”, and Florida.

I have to give it to Disney, they finally are trying to turn this thing around. It took Chapek still way too long to say anything. And let’s be real, Disney never should have been dumping money into those behind this awful Florida bill. But, we are where we are. And now, it’s Disney’s time to put in the work.

Actually, Disney has become suddenly a very visible and outspoken ally.

When I’m saying outspoken, I mean it. Beyond just that initial “we’ll talk to him (DeSantis) and see what we can do”. It’s kind of become a whole (Florida) Republicans vs Disney battle.

The disgusting “groomer” talks that the GOP love to use is back, and of course, directed Disney’s way. And now, Florida Governer has made some very specific advances to take away certain tax privileges Disney World has. I don’t know what you think, but it definitely makes me wonder how that would work out for Florida more than how this would affect Disney.

Beyond all that one of the Disney family has very publicly come out to address this. Not just denouncing the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, but that the family heir themself are also Transgender. Corra also announced the family’s plan to match donations to certain LGBTQ+ Non-Profits.

I think the biggest visible step, came with that of their 2022 Pride collection. I personally think this needed to happen pre-all this, Disney’s Pride Collection is setting some new higher corporate bars. Literally “The Disney Pride Collection.” Very specifically with the “Pride” in the name, not “rainbow” like some past collections. Not only that, but they stepped it up! Donating more than a percentage of the funds, but a 100% donation! (You can read the donation list here.) Now if more businesses can just step it up and do the same!

Don’t get me wrong, even though I was thrilled to see these moves I have to be honest, I am still holding Disney under a microscope. Hoping this is just the beginning steps to visibility and progress. We need more than PR stunts and one year of “forgive me” actions. I’m hoping these are real steps and changes that other businesses might wanna note for their Pride Collections. I guess only time will tell. At least my conscious can feel a little bit better this year when I pick up some Disney stuff…hehe.

Curious to hear what you think about all of this. Drop your thoughts in the comments below! Let’s chat!

Ehh… at least it’s a start! I agree that Disney definitely needs to continue their efforts & do more going forward.
