{Guest Post} Spring Cleaning & Mental Health

It’s that time again, Spring Cleaning Time! But more importantly, a jump start for your mental health. So what do Mental Health and Organization have to do with each other? What does getting organized do for “Mental Health”? Actually a lot!

First, allow me to introduce myself. Hi, I’m Courtney Finley and my business is Organized Designs, LLC. It’s an organizing business that I started several years ago here in the North County, San Diego area.Β I have a BFA in Interior Design.Β Always have had a passion for art and design. Also, I have always wanted to help people and have found a way to marry both! I love helping people get organized by creating organizational systems that work for them. I see over and over again just how important it is.

Now back to the Mental Health & Organization talk.

The organization process has to do with two things. One, Our accumulation of stuff. And two, actually taking the time to go through it. This task can be overwhelming for most people and some just don’t want to deal with it. Some just do not have the time to do so….or, just to think about organizing it, and then where it’s all going to be stored, can be overwhelming! Being disorganized can make us feel stressed and anxious. It can affect the way we work and how we feel.

A space that is cluttered, disorganized can have its effects on relationships too, between spouses or other members of the family as well. Not just in day-to-day, but like, when family members have to either move because they have to downsize or for other personal reasons and there is a lot of clutter it can be stressful. Things that may be needed for the next home may get tossed out just because of organizational appearance. Of course, this can cause a fracture with the helping family members and may have an effect on one’s own mental health. But by keeping organized and having supportive family members can make it easier to get rid of items that may need to go to a new home.

But this is where a Professional Organizer like myself comes in to relieve the mental stress of it all. Let’s tackle this together! Let’s find ways to set you on the right path and prevent a lot of this.

One thing I like to do with my clients is pretty simple, but helps a ton! Three boxes or bags and label them: Keep, Donate, and Trash. This is a very simple way to make quick decisions about items without all the mental stress behind trying to figure out where to start in getting organized. From there, we can dig deeper and create an organizational system that works for you and that you can maintain yourself. Giving you back that sense of independence, and removing the weight of clutter.

When we finally get to the point where we have cleaned out, sorted, organized, etc…it creates a sense of calmness, relief, and even happiness that we can finally see how much stuff was gotten rid of. Also, going through the process also helps to paint a clearer picture of how much stuff was accumulated and why.

The Benefits of being organized can greatly improve your mental health such as:

  • Reduce Stress
  • Improve Sleep
  • It can reduce anxiety and depression
  • Improve focus with your work and family life
  • Improve relationships with family members and friends
  • Give you more energy for other things in your life

Recently, I had a client who is a professional working from home. She just simply didn’t really have time to organize her kitchen. Items were just all over the place and there was no organizational system at all.  In the end, I was able to create a makeshift pantry in one area of the cabinets, created a coffee station, organized all the pots and pans in one area of the cabinets, and organize the drawers, all while creating an organizational system that worked for her! The key is to create what is quick and easy for someone to access. Tailoring to each individual’s life, wants, and needs within their space.

Truly, your mental health can greatly improve by being organized. Same for your well-being, family life, work productivity, and family/friend relationships in your life as well! This is why I am so passionate about my business.

Let Spring Cleaning be the time to empower you.

This is so true. As much as moving recently was ROUGH, it was an opportunity to sort through and clear stuff out and it definitely improved my mental health once we were done!
