Have you caught the new docuseries FX’s “Pride” yet???
Hint Hint, if you answered that with a “No” it’s on Hulu now. And YES, I am recommending it. Though, there’s a bit more thought to that. I’ll explain that later.
“Pride” is a good starting place or a good refresher for LGBTQ+ history for sure. The format is each episode kind of highlights a decade in history with different interviews and clips. It’s an easy-to-take-in documentary format. If you aren’t easy with nudity some bits or watching that with maybe your queer kiddo, have a watch first and decide. Though, it’s really only a matter in like small bits in maybe one episode. None of the clips are used in a sexualized manner, everything has a perfect framework and used for a reason. This is history, this is how it was all evolving and how the community had to fight to not only get rights but to stay alive.
Really, I think it’s good to make sure to watch it before Pride Month is over, especially if you wonder why Pride is a thing and especially if you question why it’s still necessary.
I think I know a thing or two when it comes to this history, reading, attending conferences, and living through it. But it’s easy to forget. Timelines start to blend together as the years pass. So, I was thankful for the format and breakdown of the docuseries. It was good to put things in a timeline format and remind myself how some things REALLY weren’t as long ago as sometimes I think. I know even in local San Diego law, citations for cross-dressing were still a thing up until very recently (became a law in the ’60s not starting repeals till the ’90s, one still on the books in 2020s).
In the 90s, with the “Don’t ask. Don’t tell.” policy and “Culture Wars”…we’re definitely still in this fight. And it’s just so important to remember it. Those that don’t learn from the past are damn to repeat it, as they say. Watching this will remind you why we must vote, march, protest, speak out, and not get complacent.
The only thing that gives me pause on a high recommendation is while finding helpful links for this post, I stumbled across this article, “Are You Proud FX?” by Tom Abell, Peccadillo Pictures Director. Sounds like, looks like some plagiarism. I’m hoping there will be compensation. I haven’t watched the “Are you Proud?” but just seeing the art promos and the trailer it definitely looks and feels similar enough to be true. I would say it’s just the UK version. But, I’m hopeful, that is addressed soon. I will absolutely be watching that one as well.
Have you watched FX’s “Pride” or “Are You Proud?” yet? Let’s chat in the comments!

Glad I could help 😉 With you being in the UK I’m pretty sure you need to see both.
