That moment when your kid won’t stop following you around until you watch The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
I don’t know how it is in your house, but in ours, if the teen is engaging and is full-on adamant and excited about something we listen. So when they tell us we are “required” to watch a movie we did it. Granted, I’m pretty sure our kiddo wouldn’t leave us alone till we did.
They were absolutely right about this movie! Definitely the type of family film that had been missing. Thank you, Netflix! And here I am now recommending it to you.
A short synopsis, a family of 4 and their pup are put in a situation of humans vs robots, of course, thanks to growing technology. The creators and cast are fantastic and lots of recognizable names. It’s about 2 hours but totally doesn’t feel like it!
That pug puppy of theirs is just too much! If you are on Tiktok I’m sure you’ve come across clips of him already. As a former pug parent, I was dying!
The parents try so hard to be supportive of these 2 kids. One super talented budding artist/filmmaker about to head to college with the typical teen feels. And their younger son with an adorable obsession with dinosaurs. I mean really what kid can’t relate to that?
Our teen felt like a mix of the 2 kids and was saying that I am so much like the mom and that their step-dad was a funny mix of the dad and brother. So needless to say when the movie ended both step-dad and I was in tears. It was so sweet. It’s not often our kiddo sees characters that relatable. Also, it’s refreshing to see families with mostly healthy dynamics. There are moments of typical parent/teen worries but not at all like those over-the-top dysfunctional family tropes… it was really nice to see.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines is filled with lots of cute moments. Moments that were super relatable, even in the technology apocalypse setting. But most of all we love the subtle inclusion. The main character, Katie even rocks a classic Pride Rainbow Flag Pin on her hoodie (there’s a brief moment, in the end, you get a bit more about that if you are paying attention). Love seeing more inclusion in characters! Even if it isn’t the main subject, it didn’t feel like an afterthought either.
There are even moments for those neurodiverse that would identify with, like stimming behaviors in times of high nerves. I think we just really loved it, because it wasn’t like in your face to be like, “see what we did here, look we’re representing” it was natural and made sense. None of it felt character forced.
They have a great way of connecting some important mental health messages in there. Like learning to change/modify behaviors and not hiding our emotions. Just sweet little lessons added in with all the humor.
Really, you need to watch The Mitchells vs. the Machines for yourself. There is totally enough for everyone to enjoy, you don’t have to be a kid or the family type to enjoy it.
I just don’t want to spoil any bits for you, but let’s chat about it in the comments. 😉
