A new goal, life path plan, or current hyper-fixation, either way, there have been a lot of “Van Life” talks in my house. What started as a tiny dream, then casually watching YouTubers, has now become full-on research and obsession mode. And I think we actually have a plan. Like really have a plan to do it….knocks on wood and hopes by then it is feasible.
So if you don’t know what “van life” is it’s basically what you think it is. Living out of a van. “Camping,” home on wheels. Though some of these van conversions are super impressive. Also, there is “Skoolie Life,” converted school buses or standard RV life. (Not sure if “Trailer Life” gets as much freedom as “van life” but that’s also something to research in my future.)
I actually started this dive with a lot of solo woman van life adventures. Eventually, landing in the algorithm with the solo travelers with pups in tow. Funny enough, it’s not often I find couples other than one-off van tours. But, my partner Sean started seeing all my watching and it opened a conversation I didn’t really think possible. In chatting I was realizing how much I’ve actually learned so it became a real conversation. We already loved camping, road trips, and any kind of travel we could do on our very limited budget so a lot of this was speaking to us. But we are still currently in a house with a teen stage of life, but we have thoughts.
With the way things are going rent costs trending and my work being so remote, if we can use the last few years of our teen in school to be saving and looking for the right vehicle for our conversion so post-High School say the kid is ready to move out of travel we can. Give us a few years of our things in storage, but time to explore and hopefully save.
The constant debate between us now is what sized vehicle can we survive in? Is stealth parking a priority? How do we make this work around my disabilities??? Cause as you guessed it, I have not come across many disabled “van lifers”. It worries me a touch, but at least I wouldn’t be alone. Plus, isn’t this kind of a typical “retirement” idea? At least “RV Life,” right? I’m just living my old life now, hopefully, hehe.
So thoughts and opinions before I get too far down this road. Have you lived in or attempted this before? Best advice? Or have you never thought of it or know it wasn’t for you? I love hearing your thoughts on all this.

I think it’s an awesome idea!!!! I think with rising rent costs where you are and the fact that you are doing more remote work, I’d do it!!! I have friend who is going to do a working remote year around the world program for a year! Also there’s this show on discovery plus called Van-Goo, check it out!!
